What Motivates You?

It's a rather interesting question that has been posed to me and I have to say I am somewhat perplexed. Initially, it looked a harmless enough question until you actually try and answer it. The more you try and understand the question, the harder it becomes to answer.

My first reaction was to answer with a question. What motivates me about WHAT? However, that then leads off into areas of my psyche that I don't want to get into. My second reaction was to be cocky or flippant and answer 'gravity' but that is merely deflecting the issue rather than confronting it.

So, I sat down and started to think about what motivates me. These are the ideas that I came up with....

What motivates me to get up in the morning? The thought that I can make a positive change to someones life.
What motivates me to work? The principle that I can fix a system faster than anybody else and perhaps save another persons life in the process.
What motivates me to aspire to learn and educate myself? A desire for perfection that I know can never be achieved.
What motivates me to play guitar? A yearning to create pleasure for other people.

What does not motivate me would probably yield more answers. I am not motivated by money or power or a need to prove myself to anyone other than myself. I am my own harshest critic which may, or may not be a good thing.

Having written this, I now see that my first statement is actually not the correct answer. What motivates me most is ..... love. I would walk through fire for those that I love. I would sell my soul for those that I love. My entire 'raison d'etre' revolves around who I love.

So, there you go. The question is in your court now.

What Motivates You?

I'm tempted to say nothing motivates me. Further thought yields my children. They motivate me to search for the good in life.

A totally selfish desire to make my own life more pleasant. Witnessing other people's happiness that I have helped create is just another reward. Even giving to charity is a selfish gesture. It makes us feel better. We don't hang around long enough to see if our donation gets to the right place. Margaret Thatcher was right, it pains me to admit. Ruthless, but right.

With you on the love thing.
Right now I just have a desire not to be stressed out every day and this motivates me to work harder so the price of toilet paper doesn't throw me into a tizzy.
I have to say I wish I was more motivated. I always wonder where people get it from.

Hmm. What motivated me this morning was a desire to clean up the bombsite that was my flat.

Other than that, I'll let you know when my back stops aching.

Machiavellia -> my children motivate me but that still comes under the love thing

Daphne -> nice answer my dear although I'm not sure I wanted the word Thatcher on my blog ;-)

Laura -> Not sure I'd worry about the price of toilet paper - just steal it from the pub like I do

Tippler -> I think you're just making excuses for being caught in your French maids outfit

A pointy stick!

I think Daphne is addressing the whole altrusim issue, and whether or not it truly exists...I've spent a lot of time thinking about that myself...

This is a hard question Goth- I would expect that what motivates me is to not disappoint those that I love.

Fear motivates me.
Only REAL fear, however. Not fake "The Terrah-ists are going to GET you if you don't vote for the Republicans" fear.

Nature Girl dijo...

nature. Pure and simple. Nature has always been my motivator. For everything. I suppose I should say my family, my husband, my children, love...all that jazz, but it really all just comes back to nature for me.

The first coffee of the morning motivates the hell out of me !!

Pat dijo...

Yes it has to belove and a desire to nurture and care for one's nearest and dearest and the faint possibility of leaving a mark. All of which is just as selfish as Daphnes says hers is. I used to spread a wider circle but have less steam now.

SpanishGoth dijo...

Chopski -> Would that be a chopski stick?

Princess -> I know it's a tricky question which is what foxed me

Sewmouse -> Fear can be truly motivating

Stacie -> I'd agree apart from the jazz thing

JG -> that's why I don't do coffee

Pat -> I so wish we were related and then I could give you a big Gothic hug

my children and then Q. but best friends motivate me the most as they are almost always right with their advice as a lot of the time they are 'outsiders' looking 'in' and see where i'm going wrong.

i really appreciate those friends who motivate me.

MKWM dijo...

What motivates me about WHAT?
Same for me, my entire raison d'être revolves around who I love.
But for the time being, my motivation must simply be my bed. Have a peaceful night, my friend.

SpanishGoth dijo...

Zoe -> these 'best friends' must be pretty impressive - I should go out and get me some ;)

Minky -> that's the whole point - the 'about what?' thing. As for bed being motivating... don't think so, I would class that more as comforting but thankyou for the kind words

yorlor dijo...

haha!! i'm family!! i got a gothic hug!! [oops! hubris. f#$^!!]

but seriously, my bladder motivates me to get out of bed, and then only when i can't convince it to hit snooze any longer.

after that it is the knowledge that there is something i can do to make someone's day better for having got out of my bed that day.

that usually trumps my feeling shitty about my own situation: finding something i CAN do and do well. ... i figure i woke up for a reason...

Tippler dijo...

I don't have a French maid. But if I did, I'd probably be trying to get into her outfit, yes ;-)

SpanishGoth dijo...

Yorlor -> getting out of bed does not motivate me as much as trying to get into it

Tippler -> quelle surprise but I thought you were in love or something?!

headless chicken dijo...

Aaaah....you sound lovely, not at all like a scary-goth....more of a nice fluffy-goth.
It's too early for me to think of a deep and meaningful answer as to what motivates me so I won't.
I notice on reading your profile that some of your music choices are bands I like. I love Eddie Vedder and want to have his babies.:D Pearl Jam are the best band in the whole world....ever!

headless chicken dijo...

Btw, as you are one of those computer-clever type people can you help me with my uploading problem? (see my last post)

SpanishGoth dijo...

Scary Goths? it's the 'townies' that scare me, not people who are into art, music and poetry

As for the upload, assuming you are using Blogger, I would assume it's based on the file format of the recording - try converting it to a .WAV file first

headless chicken dijo...

I know goths aren't really scary, I was just trying to be funny and failing miserably as usual! A couple of our friends who are a bit gothy are anything but scary.
As for the advice about uploading...thanks but eh?????....I'll ask one of my teenagers who incidentally can't stand 'townies'. Around here they are known as 'blads'...but 'teenage speak' is a bit like a foreign language isn't it?!

SpanishGoth dijo...

Well there are some scary goths but it's generally the ones who are somewhat rotund that scare me

phoenix dijo...

My child, which is definitely the love part of motivation. Also the fact that I actually enjoy just being here (sometimes!)

yorlor dijo...

with lack of eyebrow level and vocal intonation, i am at a loss, dear love, of your meaning.
getting into my bed should be motivation for half the fegging universe, dear love, alas, it remains half full.

SpanishGoth dijo...

Phoenix -> it's true children are truly motivating

Yorlor -> unfortunately it does happen that sometimes we all must sleep alone, or try to

yorlor dijo...

alas, five pillows, feather down, egyptian cotton and occassionally a pair of little blue pills.

it works when it has to.

SpanishGoth dijo...

Can't mix pills with Wodka - not good. Tried it before and I see pink elephants and all sorts
