The Gothic Art of Reading

It's not that complex really - if you're reading this, you can read...hoo fucking ray. Anyway, you read the book first and then decide if you like the story..

I've read so many books, it's frightening, well, it is to the illiteratti, - bar-stewards. All of the best films were books once - and a damn sight better they were too. I had to read a lot of classics to get my degree in English but that didn't make me mad (fookin hell, I was starting from mad). I kept on reading.

Why? - Because it's my life and I can do what I bloody well choose.

I have hundreds of DVD's, videos etc but it's not the same. Not at all.

So, my top 5 books ever read (that I can remember at this time) are:-

(love to K and I told you so)

- To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
- The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy - Douglas Adams
- The Art of War - Sun Tzu
- The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien
- Encylopaedia Brittanicca - various

and yours are???:-.......

Lord of the Flies - William Golding
Tess of the d'Urbevilles - Thomas Hardy
Kiss Kiss - Raould Dahl
The ice-cream war - William Boyd
The Innocent Anthropologist - Nigel Barley

(and my great favourite is Green Eggs and Ham - Dr Seuss)

Calamity Jane dijo...

Also 1. To Kill a Mockingbird

2. A Short History of Tractors In Ukrainian ... Maria Lewycka

3. The Hannibal Lecter Quadrilogy (Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal & Hannibal Rising) ... Thomas Harris (OK I know I'm cheating but I can't just choose one!)

4. Jurassic Park ... Michael Crichton

5. Just about anything by Janet Evanovich, Patricia Cornwell, Terry Pratchett or Martin Cruz Smith ... how the hell can you distill so many brilliant books that you might have read across so many different genres into one measly top 5???

Mr. X dijo...

In no particular order:

Eon - Greg Bear
Shogun - James Clavell
The Lord of The Rings - J.R.R. Tolkein
Dune - Frank Herbert
Black Beauty - Anna Sewell

Best coffee table book: The NASA Atlas of the Solar System. Beautiful, informative and literally big enough to make a table out of.

This could quite easily be a list of 50, let alone 5 - there's so much to read, and never enough time. When We stand in a large bookshop, we realise just how much we haven't read yet, and it's humbling...

Holy shit.

I kind of posted this in a light hearted way which was slightly remiss of me

Zoe -> Hate lord of the flies as I had to do it for O level English (but nice choices)

CJ -> Quadrilogy? nice word (also nice choices) - You should check out Jean Auel's books, think you'd like them

Mr X -> nice choice also. Maybe WE will tell you about yesterdays purchase which is better than a coffee table (and yes, I could have gone way beyond 50 too)

Calam's right, I also have trouble picking my top 5 books - top 5 authors, yes, but there are too many books to choose from. I'll give it a bash so in no particular order:

1) The Hobbit/LOTR

2) Great Expectations - Dickens

3) Alias Grace/The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

4) The Wind In The Willows, Kenneth Grahame

5) Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier

Now I feel like a traitor to all my other favourite books.

My top 5 would be in French, I therefore spare you the details. Anyway, I like your gothic stories very much, they would make a great book, and a very good sci-fi film too.

Yo, Goth! OK, I gotta tell ya, one of my faves EVER is the Pulitzer winning "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry. FAB, dahling!
Oh, and believe it or not, the poetry, yes, poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
:-)

I've got a mate who lives in Reading.

Oh OK

1: Blues Guitar Inside and Out. Richard Daniels. It's the story of the blues, a story about the blues and it's an instruction manual on how to play the blues.

2: Journey to the centre of the earth. I read that about ten million times when I was a kid.

3: The great escape. Nothing like the film.

4: Mr. Forgetful. Roger Hargreaves. - Hilarious

5: Any Jennings story by Anthony Buckeridge (Sp?) I'm collecting the lot.

Richard Wintle dijo...

Hmm... in no particular order, and changes randomly:

The Crow Road - Iain Banks (or Espedair Street, both are faves)

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

The Keltiad Trilogy - Patricia Kennealy-and/or-Morrison

The Moon Is Down - John Steinbeck

All of the Harry Potter books

Ariel dijo...

Fear of Flying - Erica Jong
Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth
Women - Charles Bukowski
Fear and Tremblings - Amelie Nothomb
Bodily Harm - Margaret Atwood...
... and that's only the English language ones! I cheated by including Nothomb who is a translation but she is Belgium's greatest export!

Today's list would be ...

Poisonwood Bible

To Kill a Mockingbird

Cider House Rules

Mrs Dalloway

A Home at the End of the World

Anónimo dijo...

1. Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert M. Pirsig

2. Hitch Hiker's Guide - Douglas Adams

3. Catch 22 - Joseph Heller

4. Manon of the Spring - Marcel Pagnol (also 2 excellent films - Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources)

5. Captain Corelli's Mandolin Louis de Bernieres (unusually "romantic" one for me this..)

Note to Z.: Are you familiar with Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book? Knocks Green Eggs and Ham into a cocked hat for me. Gddik Jr. and I used to rock with laughter when I read it to him at bedtime.

Anónimo dijo...

OI YOU. READ YOUR EMAILS!

Ricardipus -> welcome, but you can take the myopic wizard twit back home to Canuck

Ariel -> love Philip Roth - see you in the bathroom ;-)

Bob said -> shouldn't that be Simon says?

Gddik -> catch 22? hated it, but probably as I was forced to read it (school thing)

BB -> yeah, yeah, I was in bed being funky ;-) done now....

zoe dijo...

gddik - no, never heard of that one. do they sell it in waterstones, BXL ?

kimmyk dijo...

How's come I didn't see the bible on your list Goth?? *snicker*

5 Fav books huh? I'll think on this and I'll be back.

Princess of the Universe dijo...

1. Pride & Prejudice- Jane Austen
2. The Witching Hur- Anne Rice
3. Anne of Green Gables Series - L.M. Montgomery (just cause it's all girly and Canadian)
4. Harry Potter Series
5. Fionavar Tapestry - Guy Gavriel Kay - (for you LOTR fans, it's kind of an homage - I highly recommend picking it up)

The Hitchhiker's books just stressed me out. I think I'm too much of a control freak to be comfortable with it- hopping around from planet to planet I MIGHT be able to get used to, but not even knowing what time you're in? (Although who cares if you're in another galaxy) Ugh

DJ Kirkby dijo...

Anything by Carl Hiaassan 'cos his books are just nuts and full of madcap mayhem

Black Body by H.C.Turk

The Secrets of St Dee by Victoria Routledge

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The City of Joy by Dominique Lapierre

The Last Canadian by William C Heine

I could go on but you are probably asleep already...

SpanishGoth dijo...

Kimmy -> why would I have toilet paper on my list?

Princess -> Potter over Hitchikers? You heathen you

DJkirby - Welcome and congrats, the first list I can say I have not read a single one of

Elaine Greywalker dijo...

Just catching up and vowed not to comment on old posts but you got me here. Am a reading addict (not on your list btw). LOTR (3 - need the author?), The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (6 of those by Stephen R. Donaldson), His Dark Materials (3 by Philip Pullman), Harry Potter (er, by wossname), just about anything by Terry Pratchett, Agatha Christie, and Joan Hess (there's a sleeper). I may well read Sun Tzu. A suprise to see him on your list. Am a serials reader and have just discovered Kat Richaradson. Should be right down your alley.

SpanishGoth dijo...

Elaine -> down my alley is far better than up your passage ;-)

SpanishGoth dijo...

Yikes - not that there's anything wrong with your passage....
